MINUTES - D.R.Y.L. Meeting hosted by Red Dragon Canoe Club on

April 1, 2008

 

OPENING: Meeting called to order @ 8:00pm. President Jusino requested a moment of silence for Tom Hopely of Red Dragon as well as for John Garlotta’s father. Juice introduced Commodore Bert Redgrave who welcomed the DRYL and thanked everyone for coming. Commodore Redgrave thanked the Red Dragon members who helped this evening.

OFFICERS & COMMITTEE REPORTS

President: President Jusino thanked everyone for coming and mentioned the Opening Days that are fast approaching. He thanked PA Yacht Club for the invitation to the Princess Ball. Bill HR2550 is dead; new bill to replace it is 2766. This is for addressing the senate. Please get letters signed and sent out. Copies are available at the meeting and on the website. Questionnaires were made available if you want your club’s restaurant/bar on website.

1st Vice President: John Maloney – Spoke about response from Allison Swartz’s office and looking for support from Arlen Spector’s office.

2nd Vice President: Butch Gricco – no report.

3rd Vice President: Steve Zielinski – no report.

Secretary: Rick Patton – Sympathy Basket was sent to John Garlotta. Bill will be presented at next meeting.

Audit & Budget: Bill Branchide – nothing new. Will have something next meeting.

Banquet: Mary Jusino – no report.

Cruise: Bob Grace – Talked about his winter cruise to Florida. DRYL Cruise starting 7/12-18. Family oriented cruise. 15 openings available. Applications are available on website; $50 deposit will hold your spot. Total cost is still to be determined. Rendezvous point for cruise will be Bohemia Bay Harbor on July 12 – cruise to Rock Hall Landing – Mears Marina in Kent Narrows – Sassafrass Harbor Marina. Fuel costs are unknown at this point.

Donations – request for donation from Art Freidman for Sea Scout Ship 484. Request for $300 is approved.


Fleet Surgeon: Harry Borgenson – Mentioned cardiology conference in New York – introducing new CPR procedures (no mouth to mouth). Also discussed two new drugs (statins) that are now available: zatia and vitorin. Article about dementia talked about rationing care to these patients. It all comes down to costs. Also spoke about SPFs – Coppertone- and ultraviolet rays. Type A causes aging and type B causes burning. Protection factors – 30 prevents 96% of B rays and 60 only gives 2% more protection. Apply frequently and again after swimming. There is no protection from A rays.

Pageant: Toni Nespola – Introduced Queen Leanne and Princess Ashley. Pageant will be August 9th at the Seaport Museum. Theme will be Philadelphia Sports Team Pride. Decorated boat contest. Docking reservation forms are available and due July 1. Committee decided to have a group photo of all princesses to be given to the princesses instead of the individual button collecting. Toni distributed list of uniform dress code regulations. Princess packets were distributed. Sunday, May 18th is the first meeting with princesses, commodores and fleet captains. Pictures will be taken and all detailed information will be disseminated. Second meeting, Monday, June 9 is the interview and public speaking seminar. Wednesday, August 6 is the preliminary judging at Cannstaters. Toni addressed an anonymous e-mail that was sent. She gave a statement concerning her feelings about this letter and defended her position on enforcing the rules. These rules were established long before she was chairperson. Toni’s goal is to help these princesses in any way she can.

Picnic: Joe Gricco – September 6th at Riverside. Theme: It’s a Pirates Life for Me”. Committee meetings will begin in April. More information next month.

Public Affairs: Bill Garwood – Senate Bill 2766 – letters have been sent requesting support. There was an article and picture in the Inquirer about the aircraft carrier, John F Kennedy, being in Philadelphia. Bill was in contact with Inquirer reporter that is interested in knowing about the DRYL and its events. Bill sent him a yearbook and plans to stay in contact with him. Concerning LNG, BP continues to look for places to build a site. There are 8 proposed sites

Regatta: Fred Saunders – no report.

Safe Boating: Frank Gilbert – Distributed flyers about fire suppression systems.

Shoreline Planning: Joe Campbell – Cherokee has moved out of Camden and Pennsauken mostly due to the housing market slowing down. On the LNG issue, Joe mentioned that it’s good to know that the sites are not being approved. He feels accidents are inevitable.

Webmaster: Paul Jusino/Ben Lewitt – no report.

Yearbook: Denise Leo – Final days for ads going into yearbook. Still do not have pages or ads from some clubs. Received $3140 for ads. Yearbooks should be out for May meeting.

Boater Voter: Joe Campbell – no report.

CBYCA: Bob Williams – no report.

National Boating Federation (NBF): Bob Williams – Annual meeting will be in April in Hyanisport.

Bob spoke on the gray water issue. Urged all to send letters to senators. Bill will come to vote within a few months.

NJ Legislation: John Honer – mentioned 15 proposed bills – some from last year. Specifically A1013 concerning insurance liability. Insurance must be at least $100,000 but has to go through a hearing process. This concerns all power vessels and any vessel over 12 feet…including jet skis. Much discussion ensued about ways to get insurance possibly through homeowner’s policy and about the advantages of having insurance. Spoke about the incident at Harbor Light this past fall and the cost of not having insurance. Also talked about possibly requiring all boats attending DRYL functions to provide proof of insurance in order to dock your boat.

Pennsylvania Boating Association - SE (PBA): Bill Garwood – Thanked Pennsylvania YC for hosting last meeting, which was very well attended. Also mentioned Power Squadron supports the same issues as the DRYL and offers boating safety education. Next PBA meeting will be at Red Dragon on April 25-26 and PBA-SE will meet the third Saturday at West End YC.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

T-Shirts will be orderd 4/20/08.

Samples were presented for the DRYL brochure. Suggestions were made for distribution.

January 2009 DRYL meeting will be held at Bristol Yacht Club hosted jointly by Bristol YC and Neshaminy Harbor YC.

Anyone under the age of 57 should have a boating safety license. Everyone must have one by next year.

·         Bill Garwood will contact insurance company for DRYL events and pass on to committee heads

 

FINANCIAL REPORTS

Checkbook opening balance $19,101.87. Mike Kovacs reported income of $3,280 while Phyllis Blackeby reported disbursements of $1,434.72 resulting in a checkbook closing balance of $21,947.15. A motion was made, seconded and approved to pay the bills.
